Why Fit Wooden Garage Doors?
60Wooden garage doors are a wonderfully aesthetic addition to your garage. My neighbor just had some really nice wooden garage doors fitted to his garage and now I'm green with envy! They look warm and welcoming, which is what every home should be. But if you have the convenience of steel or aluminum garage doors that are motorized and easy to clean and maintain, you may be asking, why fit wooden garage doors at all?
Well, the answer is all about how you want your garage to look from the outside and in. If your home has already been decorated with a warm exterior with loads of wood, then a modern metallic or fiberglass garage door may not blend in with the look you're trying to create for your home.
Ok, if you have wooden garage doors that look something like the ones in the picture on the right, you might be considering replacements sometime soon! But rather than opt for a modern metallic door, why not take a good look at some of the really beautiful wooden garage doors that are available to take the place of old ones that have worn out over the years.
As far as looking after your wooden garage doors is concerned, you'll need to take a little more care of them than you would do, say an aluminum or steel garage door. If you have wood garage doors that are unpainted, for that natural look, then you'll need to give them a coating of a good wood preservative every two or three years, depending upon the manufacturer's instructions. Apart from that, a regular clean, the same as you'd have to do with any garage doors, is about all you'll need to do!
Hinges may need oiling from time to time to keep the doors opening and closing smoothly and all locks should be inspected from time to time to make sure they are all in good working order and not sticking. A word of warning here, if you come across locks that are becoming stiff, you should bever put oil into them as that will ruin them. You need to use special lock lubricating powder which can be purchased from any good hardware store.
Can Wooden Garage Doors be DIY Fitted?
Well if you have it in mind to go and fit some wooden garage doors by yourself, you can if you have experience fitting large doors, but you'll almost definitely need some help and all the necessary tools to do the job. However, there are some precautions you should take as fitting wooden garage doors is not to be taken lightly.
You'll need to be very careful working with large wooden doors such as these as the obvious things can happen like a heavy door falling on you can do a lot of physical damage. Take care that everything is properly braced to that parts don't slip. Be careful with fingers getting trapped in the moving parts and when applying wood preservatives, make sure you get plenty of fresh air. Use a breathing mask if you are concerned about inhaling noxious fumes.
The best way to fit wood garage doors is to have a profesional installer to fit them for you. This way may cost you some more, but it gives you peace of mind in knowing they will be fitted correctly and you will be covered by manufacturer's warranty when you use their own installers. On top of this, the installtion is insured when you have a professional do the work, so should anything untoward happed, and accidents can happen, then at least you are covered for any accidental damage or accidents to people.
